September 21, 2006: ...So, as if conquering Route 66 wasn't excitment enough, Diana's world was about to be rocked again. River, on one knee, proposed (and she said yes). The ring - the pull ring from Vince's Chummy's choke - perfect! Diana treasures the ring and wears it every day, with Vince's permission to keep it until a 'real' ring is chosen.

Congratulations to all and to whom it may concern on the completion of your trip, and especially to Diana and River.
(I must confess I wasn't sure it is River Dukes or Rivers Duke....or otherwise.) :-)
You can read about my day of glory with your convoy on : johnwpaige.com/robert
I seem to be missing one member of the Austin Family...I have pictures of the following (Registration Plate Numbers)
GF 4762, FH 8590, MW7502, XJ 1877. Did I miss one ?
Just an aside, I don't think there is any connnection...or maybe there might be a connection with a distant relative between Baby Austins on the Mother Road and Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas. :-)
Moses Austin was the father of Stephen and died before he reached the Promised Land.

4.30pm. Mon.25th Sept.
Home again after a fabulous trip. What memories! I want to publically thank my wonderful daughter for all the hard work she has put into this web site, also her so recent fiance, River, who contributed a huge amount in energy and expertise in supporting this absolutely mad lot of English men and women in this trip. No one in the group could possibly thank them enough. Ron would have been so proud of them and he would have been so happy at the grand finale on Santa Monica Pier.
I also cannot leave out Vince and Ken in the accolades. Vince put a lot of time and effort in the arranging of the shipping and insurance of the cars to Newark, and Ken did a superb job of co-ordinating E-mails and arrangements from keen US supporters who wanted to entertain us and support us in the venture even though some of them thought that we were mad to even try it. The whole group enjoyed themselves enormously and would not have missed it for the world.

Hello Diana.
Congratulations to you and River - sorry we were not there to cheer you!
We arrived home this morning by Virgin Atlantic.
The day before we left (24th), I was driving the Panda from Los Angeles, following Ron driving a hired car on the I-10 East travelling to Barstow. With about 100 miles to go and at 70 miles per hour, the rear left wheel brake locked solid and I careered across 4 lanes of high speed traffic to the safety of the hard shoulder. A black line about 200 yards long was left by the tyre, but fortunately it did not burst. Meanwhile Ron, unaware of the drama, disappeared into the distance.
I was able to summon a flatbed breakdown truck and made it to the Route 66 Motel in Barstow to present Ved and Mridu with the little car. Hopefully it will become an "Icon of the Road".
Kindest regards to all of you. I'll e-mail some photos when I have down-loaded them into my PC.
Regards,
Peter.
